A rare, rapidly progressing bacterial infection that destroys skin, fat, and muscle tissue.
Often caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS), but can also be due to Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium, or Escherichia coli.
Sudden severe pain, swelling, redness, and warmth around a minor cut or injury. Immediate medical attention is crucial.
Can cause severe tissue damage, systemic infection (sepsis), and be fatal if untreated within hours.
Higher risk for those with weakened immune systems, chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes), or cuts and wounds.
Involves physical exams, blood tests, imaging (MRI/CT), and tissue biopsy to identify the infection's extent and bacteria.
Requires prompt surgical removal of dead tissue (debridement) and immediate broad-spectrum antibiotics.
Includes septic shock, organ failure, extensive tissue loss, and death, requiring intensive medical care.
Proper wound care, good hygiene, and early medical attention for infection signs, especially for high-risk individuals.
This may involve multiple surgeries, skin grafts, physical therapy, and psychological support due to the trauma.
